The market for SUVs shows no signs of slowing down, cooling off, or experiencing any decline in consumer spending. People have a fondness for their SUVs and manufacturers are catering to this strong preference by continually introducing new SUV models. Infiniti, the luxury-oriented division of Renault-Nissan, used the elegant setting of Pebble Beach Car Week to reveal its plan to give its QX50 SUV a coupe-like makeover, resulting in the creation of the 2020 Infiniti QX55.

Unveiled only as a sketch, the QX55 “debut” lacks many specifics such as engine choices, pricing, or a comprehensive view of the SUV’s appearance beyond an artistic profile sketch created in a creatively expressive style. According to Infiniti, the design of the QX55 draws inspiration from the original Infiniti FX performance crossover, and based on the glimpses we have seen, the familial connection is evident.

Prior to the sketch’s unveiling, Mike Colleran, Deputy Chairman of Infiniti Motor Company, expressed, “The Infiniti QX55 is an impressive new SUV with coupe characteristics in the core of one of the industry’s swiftly expanding segments internationally.” He further stated, “Buyers will admire the unique design of the QX55, featuring a sporty coupe-like roofline. We are aware of the eager anticipation from customers and retailers for the QX55, slated to be released next year.”

Despite the scarce information on the QX55’s powertrain, Infiniti is firmly focused on our electric automotive future. At this year’s Detroit Auto Show, the Japanese brand unveiled the QX Inspiration, an all-electric design concept envisioned to provide a glimpse into the brand’s forthcoming lineup. While Infiniti is keeping details about the QX55 under wraps, it could serve as a potential platform for a luxurious all-electric crossover, especially considering the recent launches of the Audi E-Tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the much-talked-about Tesla Model Y.

Furthermore, Infiniti has been discreetly developing its all-electric infrastructure, which is anticipated to debut in the Chinese market initially. According to The Drive’s own coverage, “The inaugural vehicle based on the new platform will be one of five models that Infiniti intends to commence producing in China within the next five years. Infiniti aims to approximately triple its sales in China over the specified duration.”

However, the likelihood of the first all-electric offering from Infiniti being the aforementioned QX55 seems improbable. No elements indicative of the requisite fanfare typically associated with automakers debuting a new all-electric vehicle have been observed. If the QX55 were indeed electrified, there would have been teasers, clues, and spy shots circulating like currency in a club setting. Thus far, no revelry, no club atmosphere.

Moreover, Infiniti has previously indicated that their endeavors towards electrification may not materialize until after 2021. Until then, we have the aforementioned artistic sketch and our imaginations to ponder upon.
