The next-generation Dodge Charger’s electrified variant is generating excitement with its reported power output surpassing 880 horsepower. While details on the car, particularly regarding its electric propulsion system, have been scarce, Dodge has hinted at introducing all-wheel-drive and high power levels. Thanks to a reliable source who previously disclosed information on the car’s Hurricane inline-six engine, we now have a solid hint at the specific performance figures for the electric version.

The source, who chose to remain anonymous while discussing insights into the upcoming Charger program, disclosed various details authenticating their credibility and involvement. Among the revelations shared were comprehensive insights into the electric drivetrains of the Charger, indicating the presence of multiple options and configurations.

Reports suggest that the Charger EV lineup will comprise three variants, two of which will function at 400 volts and the third at 800 volts. One model is anticipated to feature a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, while others are likely to offer all-wheel-drive capabilities. The base EV model, projected to have a higher price point compared to the standard gasoline-powered Hurricane version, is rumored to deliver 300 kilowatts, equivalent to around 402 horsepower. Dodge previously hinted at an expected power output of approximately 455 hp for the entry-level EV, coinciding with the reveal of the Charger Daytona SRT Concept at SEMA a year ago. However, achieving this power level might involve transient power boosts to the electric motor. This particular model is anticipated to feature rear-wheel drive exclusively.

The intermediate trim is projected to be an all-wheel-drive version equipped with a front motor to enhance performance to 500kW (670 hp), according to insider information. This iteration is also expected to operate at 400V.

The highly-anticipated 800V variant, intensively promoted by Dodge, is anticipated to feature all-wheel drive, boasting an impressive power output of 660kW (885 hp). Operating at 800 volts necessitates substantial current flow to harness this power. Similar electric vehicles delivering such substantial power typically employ a tri-motor setup, akin to the configuration seen in models like the Lucid Air Sapphire, Tesla Model S Plaid, or Hummer EV. Speculation even suggests the possibility of a quad-motor system resembling that of Rivian, although this remains purely conjectural.

Power outputs of electric vehicles are easily adjustable, making it uncertain whether the reported figures are finalized for production or merely preliminary targets subject to further refinement. Should these values hold true, the base gasoline-powered variant of the Charger could potentially offer a better power-to-weight ratio than the lowest-tier electric model. Speculations suggest that the standard straight-six Charger might produce 420 hp. Furthermore, the higher-tier 510-hp ICE model could potentially boast a superior power-to-weight ratio compared to the 670-hp EV model. While the six-cylinder variants may not accelerate as briskly from a standstill, the presence of all-wheel drive could narrow the performance gap.
