Hyundai and Kia Class Action Suit Settled with Over $200 Million for Owners

Owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles affected by an easy-to-steal vulnerability finally have some relief as the companies agree to settle a class-action lawsuit with a substantial sum.

The class-action lawsuit that centered on the absence of immobilizers in a range of 2011-2022 models has reached a resolution with both Hyundai and Kia collectively agreeing to a settlement exceeding $200 million. This lack of a crucial security feature made these cars easy targets for theft, a trend that gained traction on social media platforms like TikTok when groups like the “Kia Boyz” demonstrated how effortlessly these vehicles could be stolen.

Settlement Benefits

The settlement aims to alleviate the financial burden on owners of around 4.5 million Kias and Hyundais each. Upgrades and Remedies

Apart from financial compensations, Hyundai and Kia will introduce a software update to mitigate the theft risks by configuring the cars to start only when unlocked using the key fob. While most affected models are eligible for the update, owners of exceptions will receive a $300 reimbursement to acquire alternative anti-theft measures.
