Volkswagen is openly stepping into the electric vehicle market, with plans to launch several new EV concepts in the coming years. The company has indicated that its shift towards electric vehicles will also include electrified versions of popular models, like the GTI. VW is determined to create electric variants of its iconic nameplates.
According to Jurgen Stackmann, a member of VW’s board, the GTI is suited for electrification. He stated during the Detroit Auto Show, “Clearly, the GTI fits with EVs.”
If you’re concerned that all VW’s hot hatches will transition to electric motors, there’s no need to worry. The company plans for its target of selling a million electric vehicles per year to complement its lineup of traditional internal combustion models. Stackmann assured that any electric versions of the GTI will differ significantly from their gasoline-powered counterparts, noting that “the formula would change” for these vehicles.
We might soon see an early version of the electric GTI, as Stackmann mentioned that the automaker is preparing to unveil two or three more EV concepts shortly. One of these is expected to debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in three months. Following that, a performance-oriented model may be introduced, further emphasizing Volkswagen’s commitment to expanding its electric lineup.
Additionally, the upgraded electric Microbus, known as the I.D. Buzz, which was showcased at the Detroit event, is more likely to enter production compared to previous Type 2-inspired prototypes. If the production model can indeed accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds, as the concept suggests, there might even be an electric Microbus GTI in our future.
