Subaru is enhancing its reputation for off-road capability by transforming its popular crossover into a rugged vehicle reminiscent of Mad Max, set to compete in one of Mexico’s premier off-road events, the Baja 500. Having made a significant impact in showrooms, the Subaru Crosstrek is now being pushed to its limits in this challenging race.
With a rich history in rallying and a reputation for delivering thrilling, oversteering performance cars, Subaru is partnering with Grabowski Brothers Racing and Crawford Performance to take on the Baja 500, the smaller sibling of the Baja 1000. Although Subaru has long established its playful side in dirt racing, it’s refreshing to see the brand diversifying its motorsport involvement beyond rallying.
This extensively modified Crosstrek has undergone a significant transformation, sacrificing its familiar crossover appearance for improved weight distribution and traction. Collaborating with the skilled team at Crawford Performance, a renowned race car manufacturer, Subaru’s latest creation continues to be powered by its distinctive boxer engine, celebrated for its performance characteristics and unique sound.
The Fury Road Crosstrek was piloted by brothers Parker and Dusty Grabowski from Upland, California, during the 515-mile race held on June 3rd. Although they experienced a DNF (Did Not Finish), this was their inaugural entry into the event. The Grabowski brothers previously enjoyed a successful career in short course racing, where they accumulated multiple championships.
Looking ahead, there’s always the next opportunity, and we anticipate that Subaru will devise an even more impressive machine for next year’s renowned desert race in 2018.
