It’s common knowledge that Gordon Murray’s latest creation, the T.50, is poised to become one of the finest supercars ever constructed. Boasting a sophisticated fan-driven active aerodynamics system, a 3.9-liter V12 engine crafted by Cosworth, and a manual transmission with six speeds, it’s a winning combination. While we’ve been treated to numerous sneak peeks of the development process thus far, what had been missing was a full-scale demonstration of the vehicle in action on the track. That gap has finally been filled.
During the 78th Goodwood Members’ Meeting, one of the prototype development cars, the XP5, was unleashed on the track, and it’s clear that the car’s 12,100-rpm redline was fully explored. After years of anticipation, we can finally revel in the glorious sound of the mighty 654-horsepower V12 engine.
Weighing in at just 2,173 pounds, the T.50 was piloted by development driver and three-time winner of the Indy 500, Dario Franchitti. Despite the damp track conditions restricting the car’s full performance capabilities, enthusiasts were treated to the symphony of all 12 cylinders roaring in unison. Remarkably, the engine’s sound evokes nostalgia, reminiscent of an old Formula One car rather than a modern vehicle. While this may seem unexpected, it only adds to the T.50’s allure.
There will undoubtedly be more opportunities ahead to fully appreciate the T.50, especially with the debut of its racing variant. When that moment arrives, we can expect an even more exhilarating performance from the V12 engine. Until then, the current experience stands as our best encounter yet with this extraordinary masterpiece.
Enjoy.
