The Lamborghini Urus was already a remarkable SUV sports car, but the newly introduced Urus SE takes sportiness to another level while adding a unique twist.
Performance is vital, yet not the only factor for buyers of luxury crossovers like the Lamborghini Urus. Many customers enjoy making a bold statement and standing out on the road, but they also value the ability to maintain a low profile when needed. Enter the Lamborghini Urus SE, a high-performance plug-in hybrid that excels in both aspects. The development team, led by Rouven Mohr, wisely opted to retain the familiar twin-turbo V8 engine instead of downsizing to a smaller, less powerful six-cylinder engine.
This decision reflects a smart strategy as the luxury SUV market increasingly incorporates electrification, while competitors like the Ferrari Purosangue and Aston Martin DBX have yet to follow this trend. The 5.12-meter-long Lamborghini Urus SE and models like the BMW XM are designed to attract a new clientele by delivering additional power with significantly improved real-world fuel efficiency and the capacity for fully electric driving. “From a driving perspective, the Urus SE is a leader in its category,” states Rouven Mohr, Chief Technical Officer at Lamborghini. “It embodies a super SUV that seamlessly unites various strengths, providing ultimate comfort with thrilling performance and driving enjoyment.”
Occupants are not only captivated by the immense raw power across all rev ranges, despite the Urus SE’s weight of 2.5 tonnes, but also by its improved driving dynamics. The combination of the turbo engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, electric motor, electronic differential lock, and all-wheel drive creates an exceptional level of manoeuvrability. With a simple push of the starter button and a shift using the paddle behind the wheel, the Urus SE takes off almost silently—an impressive change from its previous roaring starts that could often wake the entire neighborhood. Now, the Urus SE can depart almost unnoticed, thanks to its 26 kWh battery pack that allows for an electric-only range of just over 60 kilometers. With a remarkable fuel consumption of around two liters per 100 kilometers, this latest iteration attracts more attention than ever, featuring an updated aesthetic inside and out.
The Urus maintains its bold, futuristic, and extravagantly eye-catching design, but now features a quieter aspect—namely, the absence of the loud exhaust note from its four tailpipes. In the picturesque town of Gallipoli, southern Italy, locals gaze in wonder as the €261,500 Lamborghini glides silently past under the warm autumn sun. A Lamborghini that doesn’t roar? The Urus SE makes this possible. However, this does not mean it lacks power; the electric motor can deliver a robust 141 kW (192 PS) seamlessly integrated into the automatic gearbox.
The Urus SE can smoothly navigate city streets or reach speeds of up to 130 km/h on rural roads and highways while operating solely in electric mode. But with a swift shift of the robust driving mode lever, the exhaust roar returns, ready for the powerful side of this family-friendly Lamborghini to shine.
When the internal combustion engine collaborates with the electric system, the performance is astonishing: a driver who was just quietly cruising through the neighborhood can now access 588 kW (800 PS). With an impressive 950 Nm of torque available at just 1,750 rpm, the Urus SE accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, as the digital display and head-up unit rapidly count up the speed, while the advanced dampers support during sharp turns. On straight roads, it can achieve an astounding top speed of 312 km/h—an incredible figure for such a sizeable crossover that can comfortably accommodate four to five passengers in its luxurious leather interior.
For those with an adventurous streak, the part-time electric Urus SE can even tackle off-road paths, although the 23-inch Pirelli high-speed tires may limit its rugged capabilities. The air suspension provides a ride height adjustment range of 15 to 75 millimeters, enhancing its adaptability to various terrains. The suspension remains firm to stiff across different driving modes—solidifying its status as a true Lamborghini sports car—now capable of carrying four passengers while maintaining the ability to glide quietly.
