Due to the complexity of the updated EV tax credit, the IRS initially faced challenges in categorizing vehicles as SUVs or sedans/wagons. For instance, the Cadillac Lyriq was initially labeled as a wagon, the Ford Mustang Mach-E was not considered an SUV, and the Volkswagen ID.4 was classified as a car in RWD configuration and an SUV in AWD setup. As a result, some of these vehicles were excluded from the tax credit eligibility criteria. However, there has been a recent shift in this decision. It is a welcomed change to see a government official gaining new insights. It seems like a brighter day indeed.
Following complaints from at least one of the above-mentioned automakers, the IRS has now confirmed that the Lyriq, Mach-E, every electric SUV from Volkswagen, and every Tesla Model Y indeed fall under the SUV category. This revision means that their price threshold for qualifying for the full EV credit has been increased to $80,000 from $55,000.
Ford has already reduced the prices of the Mach-E to ensure that the lower trims meet the $55,000 threshold for the EV tax credit. Tesla has also implemented significant price reductions, affecting all its models, not just the SUVs. The reasons behind the electric automaker’s price cuts may vary. While the Lyriq is anticipated to introduce a base model priced below its current $60,000 mark, it is projected to remain above $55,000. Reports suggest that Volkswagen does not intend to decrease the prices of its electric vehicles.
This development marks a positive change from the IRS. More individuals will now be able to afford electric vehicles. However, certain hurdles remain for other automakers. The current EV tax credit mandates that battery materials must originate from the United States or a nation with friendly ties to it—excluding countries like China or Russia. Some manufacturers, such as Hyundai, are encountering challenges in meeting this requirement, which results in their vehicles not qualifying for the complete tax credit.
