“It’s not just a car; it’s a story.” This adage encapsulates what I’ve learned throughout my journey in Speedhunting and connecting with car enthusiasts.
This sentiment is particularly evident in Domenic and Sarah’s 1991 Suzuki Cappuccino. While it’s a remarkable build on its own, this kei-class roadster holds a significance that goes far beyond its impressive features.
While many see cars as mere objects, those who share our passion recognize their true potential. We have the creativity to modify and reshape them, yet they often reflect our experiences and the connections we make along the way.
Despite its small size, the lightweight Suzuki Cappuccino delivers a punch akin to a heavyweight boxer, securing its spot in the hearts of fans of JDM performance cars.
Interwoven in the restoration of this Cappuccino is a narrative of love, legacy, and the dream-chasing spirit—it’s remarkable what can be contained within just 725kg!
A Pocket-Sized Dream
Sarah’s connection with the Cappuccino dates back to a dream she nurtured since her teenage years. This aspiration appeared unattainable until her friend Benny from BCW offered to sell her this prized possession when she needed it most.
Sadly, during this time, Sarah was battling a severe form of cancer. This wasn’t merely a car sale; it was an act of compassion during her chemotherapy.
For Sarah, building the car became a form of therapy, allowing her to express her passion and creativity even amidst illness. Each adjustment—whether choosing wheels, sourcing exhaust systems, or fitting a wide-body kit—spurred vibrant discussions about the transformations taking place in her little Suzuki.
Yahoo! Auctions Japan became her ultimate source of retail therapy.
Dom recalls that, rather fortuitously, the project unfolded smoothly. Despite the typical delays in sourcing top-notch hands for the build, there were surprisingly few snags. Perhaps this was due to meticulous planning or the commitment of their talented circle of friends.
A Simple Plan
At the core of this compact powerhouse sits a 657cc inline-three turbocharged engine – small yet powerful, just like Sarah herself.
Under the hood, most elements remain OEM, but the three-cylinder powerhouse features a boosted output, complemented by a larger GFB blow-off valve and boost controller. A full HKS exhaust system ensures that the engine’s voice reflects its strong character. An Xtreme heavy-duty clutch, paired with a Cusco 1.5-way LSD, provides a smooth transfer of power to the road.
BC Racing coilovers ensure an exhilarating ride while delivering precision, contributing to the ideal stance and handling that Dom cherishes during his spirited drives through the mountains.
A set of 13×6.5-inch RS Watanabe R-Type wheels were refinished by Mark Hooker from Sydney’s Barrel Brothers, with Tyre Solutions mounting Yokohama Advan A050 semi-slick rubbers.
These modifications not only enhance the Cappuccino’s appearance but significantly improve its performance, allowing it to grip the road with confidence.
With the keys in hand while driving along the scenic roads of the Blue Mountains, I can attest that the Suzuki is an exhilarating experience.
The Cappuccino sports a Toyoshima Craft wide-body and US Racing Sports kit, elevating its stance while paying tribute to the glorious days of Japanese motorsport with its Advan livery.
Just to clarify, the car isn’t black with a red wrap; it’s painted in Toyota Supra Monza Red, adorned with a black wrap. I was fooled too!
Tragically, Sarah passed away in August 2022, leaving behind a legacy that lives on in every aspect of the car.
For Dom, getting into the Suzuki is always a sight to see; a large man in such a compact car never fails to generate smiles. Every drive serves as a heartfelt tribute to Sarah’s spirit and talent. Despite its tiny frame, this vehicle dominates the mountain roads with Sarah’s vibrant spirit.
Today, this car stands as a powerful symbol of their shared passion and imagination, acting as a tangible connection to the past—a moving time capsule filled with memories. Moreover, this Suzuki represents Sarah’s last heartfelt gift to Domenic. Every facet of this build conveys one powerful message: woven into this project’s blueprint, Sarah established a lasting legacy.
