Review of Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Is the Pro Worth It?

In recent years, Apple has upgraded the chips in its iPhone Pro models to boost performance, creating a noticeable distinction between them and the standard models. However, this year all models share a common foundation with the new A18 chipset. The iPhone 16 Pro features the A18 Pro, which includes a larger CPU cache and an additional graphics core for enhanced performance. Despite this, benchmark tests reveal that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are only slightly less powerful than the Pro versions, outclassing other smartphones on the market.

During testing, I played top-tier games like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. I experienced slightly more lag and some crashes on the standard models, likely due to using a developer beta of iOS 18.1. It’s worth noting that these games are among the most demanding in terms of graphical performance, so I was intentionally pushing the devices to their limits. Most games, however, run smoothly. While the Pro models showcase enhanced thermal management, Apple had also made adjustments for better heat dissipation in the standard models, which did not feel excessively hot during use.

Crucially, every iPhone 16 model will support Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features set to be released in an update this October. I detail these features in my iOS 18 guide and provide an overview of the current experience in my iPhone 16 Pro review. Many day-to-day tools will be available, including real-time transcriptions for Voice Notes and call recordings. However, we will need to wait for Apple to release the complete package.

Battery life stands out as a strong feature of the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16 Plus managed to deliver over seven hours of screen time with 36% battery remaining at 1 AM, outperforming even the Pro Max. The iPhone 16 itself also performed well, providing six hours of screen time with about 20% battery still available. This usage involved a variety of activities, including scrolling through Instagram, taking photos, navigation, and streaming music—ideal for an entire day’s worth of use. Furthermore, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are designed for simpler battery replacement than the Pro models, earning a repairability score of 7 out of 10 from iFixit, marking a significant improvement from previous years.

Unfortunately, there has been no enhancement to the charging port specifications. Though Apple transitioned to USB-C last year for the iPhone 15, the data transfer speeds remain capped at 480 megabits per second. The Pro models, in contrast, boast USB 3 speeds of up to 20 gigabits per second, highlighting a significant disparity that is only relevant for those transferring files via a cable.

Impressive Cameras

When it comes to photography, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus hold their own. I found minimal differences, even in low-light conditions, whether using the main or ultrawide cameras. The Pro models may have a slight edge, but the distinction is minor. The newer 12-MP ultrawide camera includes autofocus capabilities, making it possible to capture macro shots. I’ve had a blast taking close-ups of my dog’s nose—adorable!
