Ram Unveils Innovative Split Tailgate at Chicago Auto Show
Truck manufacturers are consistently striving to enhance customer experience through new technologies, and one significant focus area is the tailgate. To rival GMC, Ram has introduced a unique split tailgate that functions much like a Swiss Army Knife.
As anticipated, Ram showcased this new tailgate at the Chicago Auto Show. The design features a 60/40 split that operates like a traditional tailgate—with dampening and automatic release—but can also be opened independently on each side.
Reid Bigland, the head of the Ram brand, stated, “The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful. Combined with Ram’s class-exclusive RamBox feature and new tailgate step, we’re taking Ram’s cargo management and storage to the next level.”
This tailgate will come equipped with a spray-in bed liner and offers the option of a center step for easier access to the bed.
The introduction of this tailgate sets the stage for a competition with GMC’s MultiPro tailgate, as both provide distinct functionalities. It remains to be seen how customers will respond to these innovative options.
The Ram Multifunction Tailgate will be available at dealerships in the second quarter of this year for Ram 1500 models. It will retail for $995, with an additional $295 for the optional step.
Currently, the Ram tailgate is exclusive to half-ton trucks, while GMC’s MultiPro gate can be found on both half-ton and heavy-duty models.
What are your thoughts? Is this feature worth the investment, or is it merely another accessory for pickup trucks that won’t receive much use?
