Recently, Nissan engaged with fans on Twitter by asking a straightforward question: “Which NISMO racecar is the greatest of all time?” This query was part of the NISMO Top 20 poll, launched to honor the 20th anniversary of the annual NISMO Festival, set for November 26 at Fuji International Speedway. After an intense week-long voting period, the Skyline GT-R R32 emerged victorious.
On Wednesday, Nissan revealed that the R32 secured the most votes, surpassing 19 other Nissans, including several high-performance NISMO models. The brand credited the R32’s triumph to its achievements in events like the Spa 24, Bathurst 1000, and various Australian Touring championships during the early 1990s, alongside its popularity stemming from the Gran Turismo video game series.
The competition for the R32 was stiff, with the Skyline GT-R R34 and the GT-R NISMO GT3 finishing in second and third places, respectively. Other significant contenders included the 300ZX, GT-R Super GT, GT-R GT500, and Datsun 510. The strong showing of the GT-R R34 was particularly surprising, as it led by a substantial margin when the poll was first announced and boasts a dedicated fanbase.
The R32 is often credited with modernizing the iconic Skyline GT-R. After a 16-year break, Nissan moved away from the classic designs of the C10 and C110 (the first and second generations of Skylines) to introduce a high-performance all-wheel-drive coupe featuring the legendary RB26DETT engine. The following generations, R33 and R34, built on the R32’s innovative design and powertrain, ultimately leading to the R35 supercar currently available.
