Mazda has announced a recall for its current-generation MX-5 Miata due to concerns that the airbags could deploy with excessive force during a crash.

This recall impacts all MX-5 Miatas manufactured from the 2016 to 2023 model years, totaling approximately 77,670 vehicles in the U.S.

A recall notice released by the NHTSA on September 18 (recall campaign number 24V695000) indicates a software error in the module known as the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor control module.

The software malfunction can cause front airbags to deploy with excessive force in minor collisions, rather than the intended lower force, which may increase the risk of serious injuries, especially for occupants who are not wearing seat belts, according to the notice.

Mazda reported that it first became aware of the problem in early 2023 when it identified a misconfiguration affecting a calibration tool. The company stated that there have been no reports of injuries related to this issue.

To resolve the matter, dealers will update the control module software, and this service will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting November 17. For further information, they can contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 or visit the automaker’s recall page.
