Hyundai is collaborating with New York-based fashion label Zero + Maria Cornejo to create 15 distinct clothing items using surplus materials from its car seat manufacturing unit. This initiative is part of this year’s New York Fashion Week scheduled for September.
The theme for this year’s event in the city is “saving the planet in style.” This partnership involves Hyundai Motor Company and its Transys department, renowned as one of the foremost car seat manufacturers globally. The automaker will provide materials for Zero + Maria Cornejo to craft one-of-a-kind garments as part of its “Re:Style” cultural initiative, which celebrates the upcycling collaboration between the automotive and fashion sectors.
Among the materials provided are unused leather intended for specific vehicle seats and 100% organic dylan cotton denim, recognized with Cradle to Cradle Gold certification.
Maria Cornejo remarked, “The whole idea is to do something creative with things that have had a life before. It’s about making something new and re-imagining things. Re-create, re-imagine, re-cycle. How do we get creative with less?”
Cornejo has expanded her fashion brand by utilizing eco-friendly materials, including natural silk and dyes, while reducing reliance on oil, all aimed at promoting environmental awareness and protecting natural ecosystems.
An array of influential celebrities, fashion designers, and stylists are anticipated to attend the prestigious Re:Style event, which is slated for September 6 at the Public Kitchen restaurant.
“Hyundai Motor designed Re:Style to further our mission of becoming a more sustainable company and to encourage discussions around eco-conscious lifestyles,” said Wonhong Cho, Hyundai Motor Company’s Global Chief Marketing Officer. “This cultural gathering in the heart of New York City allows us to collaborate with one of the leading eco-friendly designers and share our vision for advancing humanity. We aim to showcase that something beautiful and new can emerge from what was once used.”
