As a child, I cherished playing with my Tonka trucks, and I developed a nostalgic admiration for the Toyota pickups from the 1980s, which exuded a tough and stylish vibe. The newly unveiled HiLux Tonka concept by Toyota Australia instantly rekindles those memories of my sandbox adventures. According to product design chief Nicolas Hogios, the concept was “Inspired by the Tonka trucks that kids play with in their backyards,” and it takes the already impressive capabilities of the HiLux to new heights, making it ready to tackle rocky and challenging terrains.

Celebrating Tonka’s 70th anniversary alongside Toyota’s 80th, both brands collaborated to create something truly remarkable. They started with the HiLux SR5 double-cab (essentially a Tacoma in the U.S.) and added a plethora of enhancements. This concept is visually striking—complete with roll bars, a huge skid plate, a snorkel, oversized fender flares, LED light bars, and even a spare tire and fuel cans in the bed. With upgraded springs and shocks, it boasts a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and has been designed to be longer, wider, and taller than the standard SR5. It looks capable of outperforming the typically tough HiLux. This off-road machine embodies all essential features without appearing to overdo it with aftermarket parts from discount 4×4 catalogs. I can’t help but wish for one, including its delightful Tonka-themed paint scheme.

Unfortunately, this remains just a concept truck. Much like when I was nine and realized I had left my treasured Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars behind on the dirt track I had set up at the 12 Hours of Sebring, I feel disappointed. While creating a similar vehicle yourself is possible, it likely won’t match the original’s charm. However, for those eager to indulge in this childhood dream, the HiLux Tonka will be making promotional appearances and participating in 4WD shows across Australia. If you happen to be in the area, keep an eye out for it.
