The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty series showcases some impressive trucks, but for those who need even larger vehicles, the chassis cab models are available. These trucks, which do not come with a bed, are specifically designed for tough jobs across the United States. Following the successful launch of the Heavy Duty lineup, Ram is now unveiling its refreshed chassis cab models in Chicago.
This year’s Ram Chassis Cab boasts class-leading specifications, including a maximum towing capability of 35,220 pounds when properly equipped, a payload capacity of 12,510 pounds, and a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 43,000 pounds. The power behind these figures comes from the new Cummins diesel engine, which offers 360 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque.
While some may wonder why the torque isn’t at 1,000 pound-feet, the duty cycles for these commercial trucks differ from those in standard consumer vehicles, dictating the ratings. Nevertheless, the 800 pound-feet of torque remains a leading figure within the Class 4 and Class 5 categories.
The Chassis Cab is available in three configurations: 3500, 4500, and 5500 models. Additionally, Ram offers a Gross Vehicle Weight Class 2 truck that can handle up to 10,000 pounds. In a recent statement, Ram emphasized its straightforward approach to differentiating its trucks, presenting four clear price and weight classifications.
For the 2019 models, Ram has transitioned to using 97-percent high-strength steel frames, enhancing both strength and weight efficiency. The automaker claims a weight reduction of 120 pounds while maintaining torsional stability and ensuring that upfitting remains hassle-free without interference from components above the rear axle.
The new Ram Chassis Cab introduces advanced technologies, including autonomous emergency braking that integrates with trailer brakes, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. The well-received 12-inch reconfigurable touch screen from the pickup versions is now also featured in the Chassis Cab models.
The vehicle is equipped with a 270-degree camera system, along with front and rear parking sensors to facilitate easy maneuvering. Additionally, a cargo-view camera simplifies the process of connecting to a fifth-wheel hitch.
Similar to the new Heavy Duty series, Chassis Cab trucks include tire pressure monitoring sensors that can accommodate up to six wheels and 12 trailer tires across four different trailer profiles.
Ultimately, the capacity for easy upfitting is crucial for these trucks. The power take-off (PTO) options support attachments on both sides of the vehicle, and the onboard electronics can connect with 70 different aftermarket modules, making this the most upfitter-friendly Ram Chassis Cab to date.
The Chassis Cab is specifically designed for those who require a robust work truck, and it is evident that Ram has incorporated successful elements from its pickup truck line to enhance this new model.
