Typically, when automakers unveil revamped vehicles, they tout advancements like increased speed, enhanced strength, superior design, and improved efficiency compared to previous models. However, General Motors seems to be diverging from this pattern with its latest lineup of pickup trucks, particularly concerning fuel efficiency.

A report from Automotive News indicates that the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, when equipped with the 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines, will achieve lower miles per gallon than the models they replace.

An examination of fueleconomy.gov reveals that the 2019 Silverado with the 4.3-liter engine offers a combined fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon, in contrast to the 2018 model, which achieves between 19 and 20 miles per gallon depending on whether it has rear- or four-wheel drive. Similarly, the 2019 V8 Silverado also delivers 17 miles per gallon combined, representing a one-mile-per-gallon decrease compared to its predecessor.

Even the new 2.7-liter four-cylinder variant, which was marketed as more fuel-efficient, only manages a modest 21 miles per gallon. When questioned about these disappointing figures, GM’s response suggested consumers focus on real-world performance rather than just the ratings.

In addressing the drop in fuel efficiency, a Chevrolet spokesperson explained to Automotive News that the declines are a result of numerous advancements that led to increased aerodynamic drag. “We increased towing capacity, payload, and it’s a much larger bed and a much larger cab,” the spokesperson stated.

Despite an overall boost in aerodynamic efficiency by 7 percent and a reduction in curb weight by up to 450 pounds for the new trucks, Chevy contends that these improvements are counterbalanced by the enhanced frontal area. As a result, the new Silverado’s broad grille, which has sparked considerable debate about its appearance, may also be contributing to reduced fuel efficiency.

The Drive has contacted Chevy for additional insights and will provide updates should they respond.
